Modulating application behaviour for closely coupled intrusion detection

    Get PDF
Includes bibliographical references. This thesis presents a security measure that is closely coupled to applications. This distinguishes it from conventional security measures which tend to operate at the infrastructure level (network, operating system or virtual machine). Such lower level mechanisms exhibit a number of limitations, amongst others they are poorly suited to the monitoring of applications which operate on encrypted data or the enforcement of security policies involving abstractions introduced by applications. In order to address these problems, the thesis proposes externalising the security related analysis functions performed by applications. These otherwise remain hidden in applications and so are likely to be underdeveloped, inflexible or insular. It is argued that these deficiencies have resulted in an over-reliance on infrastructure security components

    Tentacle : a graph-based database system

With the advent of large and complex applications and the emergence of semi-structured information repositories such as the World Wide Web, new demands are being made on database systems. The TENTACLE database system is an experimental database system which provides facilities capable of meeting some of these demands. The distinguishing features of the system are that it: uses a graph-based data model (and storage subsystem) to provide a flexible means of representing poorly structured information, integrates a path expression-based query language with a general purpose language to query and manipulate the graph structures, thereby eliminating the impedance mismatch encountered in a two language system, and provides a programmable database kernel capable of executing the combined query and utility language, allowing the construction of domain specific applications inside the database without the assistance of wrappers or gateways. As a demonstration of the utility of the system, I have constructed a hypertext server inside the TENTACLE database without making use of external mediators or gateways. Since the hypertext server program is part of the database content, database facilities may be used to assist in the creation and maintenance of the hypertext server itself. In addition, the close integration of hypertext server and database simplifies tasks such as the management of associations between hypertext entities or the maintenance of different document views

Special issue conclusion : The GLES Open Science Challenge 2021 in hindsight: experiences gained and lessons learned

TENTACLE: A Database System for the World Wide Web

1 Introduction The world wide web is the largest networked hypertext system. While it may be seen as a networked database in its own right, its interaction with more conventional databases has been surprisingly limited. Almost all hosts which constitute the world wide web store hypertext documents on a conventional file system and not in a database. In the few cases where information is indeed stored in a database, extensive processing is usually required to transform the information from its internal storage representation to a form which is accessible to the end user. Essentially the databases commonly encountered on the world wide web are regular databases which are accessible through a web-based interface. In such cases the world wide web serves as a mere gateway to another database

Assessment of energy crops alternative to maize for biogas production in the Greater Region

The biomethane yield of various energy crops, selected among potential alternatives to maize in the Greater Region, was assessed. The biomass yield, the volatile solids (VS) content and the biochemical methane potential (BMP) were measured to calculate the biomethane yield per hectare of all plant species. For all species, the dry matter biomass yield and the VS content were the main factors that influence, respectively, the biomethane yield and the BMP. Both values were predicted with good accuracy by linear regressions using the biomass yield and the VS as independent variable. The perennial crop miscanthus appeared to be the most promising alternative to maize when harvested as green matter in autumn and ensiled. Miscanthus reached a biomethane yield of 5.5 ± 1 × 103 m3 ha−1 during the second year after the establishment, as compared to 5.3 ± 1 × 103 m3 ha−1 for maize under similar crop conditions
